The 'HURVA' synagogue was originally built by Rabbi Yehuda Ha-Hasid from 1700 to 1705.

It was later destroyed by Moslems, and rebuilt in 1856. Standing at a height of 25 meters, this synagogue was the tallest, most magnificent structure in the entire Jewish Quarter. For extended periods, it formed the heartbeat of the Quarter, the center of Jewish life and the center of the spiritual life in the Quarter. The synagogue was destroyed by the Jordanians in 1948, and has not been rebuilt since.

In accordance with a government decision, JQDC published a project tender procedure for planning and municipal authorization. The project was initiated in November 2005, and foundation work should be completed by June 2007. The budget will be divided between three ministries: The Ministry of Housing, N.I.S. 10 million; the Ministry of Tourism, N.I.S. 10 million; the Ministry of the Interior, N.I.S. 4 million.
